Helmet Mounted Nokia N95

The helmet mounted camera is not a new idea, but if you have ever looked into getting one you realise soon enough that they are kind of pricey. As are the mounts for camcorders to a helmet (or you could use gaffer tape). Since I don't like to spend lots of money on something I'll only use once or twice I decided to make something to solve the problem.

The ingredients:
N95 with original case.
Helmet fixture for bike head light.

Put them together and you get something like this.

There are two other important things to take care of. The first is the screen and buttons of the phone. Anyone who has tried to use the case that came with the N95 will have relieased it was a piece of crap because the lid would press on the buttons. We obviously don't want that when taking a video. Also the end of the bolt would press straight onto the screen and would damage it quickly. The solution there is to get some think cardboard or foam and cut it to the size of the screen. It has to be thick enough for the lid to bow slightly and clear the buttons.

The second thing to take care of is camera stablisation. You can get enough pressure using the bolt to stop the whole case from spinning. The solution to that is some good old rubber bands.

And there you have it. After that its just a matter of putting it on the helmet and firing up the video camera. As far as helmet placement goes I found further to the back of the helmet is better and point the camera upwards when look at the helmet from the side. I was surprised how far forward the top of my head is when I ride.

Anyway here is the result after I got it right. You will notice that the rubber bands aren't evenly matched so you will have to tilt your head a little.

Few beers after work and I belt home on Gary. Grooven home taking it easy because I have the spare wheel on the back. The new one is getting some attention at TR. Anyway I stop off at the bottle shop on Vic St pull a nice little manual over the gutter bunny hop the grate in the middle of the drive way and them remember that only one of the brakes is working (didn't adjust the V-brake on the back). So I endo all the way up to the counter trying to stop. Dropped that back wheel down just as i got there. Guy at the coutner "Was that supposed to be a trick", "Yeah sorta".

Single Again

Not since the Blue Devil (my first BMX with the yellow Tuffs) have I ridden a single speed. But, I must say it was a refreshing experience, banging around on an SE Lager. Ended up doing about 40kms today, but since it wasn't my bike I ended up using Sports Tracker rather than my bike computer. All the trips are here:

Ride quick enough and you can chance them down the line as they go off. Dodge the pedos with a bit of Metal playing, brightens up a Monday night.

Wireless Routers and WDS

Trying to get a Billion 7401VGPM to talk WDS to A Billion 7202GA would work on with both routers on the latest version of firmware. Turns out you have to downgrade the 7202GA to get things to work. The thread on whirlpool (with the very heplful reply is here) is here.

Imbos idea of trying a Buffalo WHR-G54S and changing its firmware to DD-WRT which allows it to connects to my main unit as a client and I can use WPA2 wireless security instead of WDS/WEP sounds like a winner. In a way I hope the 7202 dies sometime soon.

N95 GPS Comparison

Give the discussions on the change in firmware for the N95 to include A GPS. I decided to ru my own tests. The post here describes some "zig zag" introduced by the new firmware. So what I decided to do was try recording a track in Sports Tracker using 2 N95s side by side.

My phone still has the V11.0.026 firmware (the blue'ish color) the other phone (green'ish color) has the 12.0.0.014 version on it. The test took place driving a car over a few kilometers at speeds between 20kph and 60kph. The route wasn't past any large buildings. Also both phones had the GPS filtering in Sports Tracker set to Medium.

As you can see there isn't any zig zag. However on the lower of the two east-west legs there was some difference the track. Interestingly on the top most and shorter east-west leg the difference is much smaller. So I'd say there isn't any zig zag present at car speeds.

I'd like to check this at bike/run speeds but I don't think my mate will lend me his phone to go mountain bike riding with. Either way I am happy enough to try the new V20 version firmware out.

Well I've finished my first 24hour enduro. Did it in a team of 6 riders which is hard enough. Team of 4 would have been hard but ok anything less than that, would just be pain. So I am totally blown away by the solo riders. Winning male rider did 20laps!! Of the 3 laps you could say the average lap distance was 18kms so thats a massive 360km.

I'm pretty lucky, it looked like it wasn't going to happen for a while. Up until the Tuesday before I had no team. I posted on the FGP forums and found a team. Managed to slot into a team with some guys that were in it for the fun and which made it a good experience. We didn't do to badly considering broken bars and lights failing during a lap.

The tracks out at Forrest would have to be some of the best I have ridden. Marriners Run with the long downhill stretch of berm after berm, cutting up and back the sides of a small gully, left me with a grin ear to ear. The colorless night lap which I had not been looking forward to I really enjoyed only being able to the next few meters of track is a little zen and some weird shit goes thru your head during a late night lap. I had the Sinnead O'Conner song, Nothing Compares to You, going thru my head.

I do another one. Nothing like being at an event thats all about my favorite type of bike. Its bike bike porn, lots of awesome bikes in the one place, touching each other, getting dirty together.....

Seriously the though the size of it was good, lots of riders while still maintaining a sense of community and no long massive queues for stuff. Everyone knew who broke their bars on the first lap.

I broke my bike Gary 18 days ago.

So 18 days after this mortal wound, I still don't know if the warranty claim on the frame will be honored. Aparently has to go to america to be approved. So I hope my next Gray Fischer aka Trek frame is a little better. Its not like this bike did jumps just daily commutes.

Continental Sport Contact Puncture

As I wheeled my bike out ready to go to work today I there was something wrong with the front tyre. The Continental Sport Contact that I bought in feburary '07 had a puncture. For a tyre that claims to be puncture resistant this was a let down (literally). What is even more disappointing is that the blurb that comes with the tyre says that they guarantee the tyre will be puncture resistant for 12months. But to get the change over tyre you have to pay a $29.90 shipping fee. On a $45 tyre it hardly seems worth it considering they're not going to fix the inner tube.

MTB Ride Yarra Trails

Like most of the posts lately this one involves the N95. Used it to record a 3 hour ride. Check it out here. Before riding I stumbled across this post on Digital Urban, which explained how to geotag photos so some of those should be in the file. If you have a look at some of the pics check out some of the work done by the trail workers, the dudes who build that drop off, very impressed by its construction.

As far as battery goes, it held up very well. It only dropped about 3 bars the whole time and it had a few calls made and the pics. I think the issue with the battery life while using GPS has more to do with the application your using the GPS with than the GPS itself. When you think about it dedicated hand held GPS run off a few AA batteries are run for 30+ hours.

I've also been able to answer one of my questions that I made here. The way to navigate back to a point is to make a landmark of it while your there and then you can use Tools -> GPS -> Position then use Tools -> GPS -> Naviation of the Maps app to find directions back to it.

Finding a Lat/Long using Whitepages

First off search for the location using the normal search, if what your searching for can be seen on a whereis map your in luck.

Hit the map link.

Go up to the URL bar at the top scroll across its quite long. In amongst it you will find a latitude and longitude.

These coordinates are GPS coordinates so you can just create a new landmark from in an N95.

How old you are is all in your mind, however sometimes the world provides you with a reflection of yourself that you must deal with. The choice is all yours.

I've had to face a few reflections to deal with recently. These things are going to be personal and subjective to the individual. So if it doesn't make sense that's probably why.

One being the the new Daniel Johns song and more importantly the resultant pic of Silver Chair on the cover of the recent Rolling Stone. Fuck me they look young. But then again they looked young the first time I saw them. Fuck it they were they were always younger than me. 60 minutes did a story on them. Newcastle metal band about to make a truck load of money ( I though they were such arseholes at the time). To be honest with ya I like Frogstomp more now than I did at the time. It had a little to do with the fact that I was a little more h@rdC0r3 at the time (ie to involved in my own shit) to notice what these talented little MoFos were up to.

The second reflection I've experienced recently was a doco on classic albums. I was watching SBS one night and caught this. I saw this dude, balding , in a polo shirt and thought who the hell is this and why does he know so much about Nirvana? Only to realise that it was Krist Novoselic. Fuck! That dude is the same as age me (or there abouts). But then again so is my cousin and he is balding, polo shirt wearing and has kids. Nirvana, you just had to be there.

I'm so glad I'm not going bald or grey. No I'm serious (I'm not going bald or grey), its like hangovers, I refuse to let my body do that stuff. I'm also not a negative creep when I'm stoned. I'm negative all the time.

We can see the picture above taken on location during the Top Gun filming where Val can clearly be scene limbering up his jaw for the big bite. For mine it was all Val who improved the bite as if to say piss off Tom you short arse.

What the fuck is with Queensland and this stupid 15% surcharge on public holidays ? More to the point charging it on days that aren't public holidays. For instance easter saturday is not a public holiday.
1, It's a saturday, traditionally a weekend day.
2. Because its on a weekend it can never be public holiday.

If I could have I would have taken my business elsewhere, right back to Victoria.

The whole 15% surcharge is a crock anyway, its just an excuse to be able to fleece people who go away for the weekend. Most business owners would know well in advance that public holidays will occur in the up coming year and how many they will be. They could quite easily factor this "surcharge" into there prices across the year, like normal people would. Although this would seem far to difficult for Queenslanders.

And don't get me started on the lack of Sunday trading, fark....

At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated:

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating (by Mr. Welch himself):

"If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1) For no reason whatsoever your car would crash twice a day.
2) Every time they painted new lines on the road you would have to buy a new car.
3) Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive on.
4) Occasionally, executing a manoeuvre such as a left turn, would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.
5) Only one person at a time could use the car, unless you bought "Car95" or "CarNT". But then you would have to buy more seats.
6) Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, reliable, five times as fast, and twice as easy to drive, but would only run on five percent of the roads.
7) The oil, water temperature and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single "general car default" warning light.

Attempting to delete this option would immediately cause the car's performance to diminish by 50% or more. Moreover, GM would become a target for investigation by the Justice Department.
12) Every time GM introduced a new model car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.
13) You'd press the "start" button to shut off the engine.
